Transport Fare Hike Unwarranted – Hassan Tampuli

Government Reminds Unions of Low Fuel Prices and Economic Conditions

Story Highlights
  • Tampuli asserts there’s no basis for raising lorry fares in the next six months
  • The government will not support unjustified fare hikes
  • Ghana enjoys some of the lowest petrol prices globally

Deputy Transport Minister Hassan Tampuli has firmly stated that there’s no justification for raising transport fares, despite discussions among several transport unions, including the Concerned Drivers Association, about a potential increase.

At a press conference in Accra on October 30, Tampuli reassured the public that the current economic conditions suggest a possibility of lowering fares instead.

“There’s no basis for any increase in lorry fares in the next six months. Ghana is one of only nine countries where petrol prices are below $1, making our rates among the lowest globally,” he emphasized.

He urged transport unions contemplating fare hikes to reconsider, asserting that the government will not endorse unjustified increases. His comments aim to alleviate public concern over potential fare rises that could add financial strain during challenging economic times.
