Tensions Mount as EC Suspends Collation in Nine Key Constituencies
Opposition Parties Reject Suspension, Call for Transparency in Disputed Election Results
- EC halts collation in nine constituencies
- NDC and NPP representatives reject the move, citing risks to fairness and legitimacy
- NDC supporters block roads at the EC’s Accra office
The Electoral Commission (EC) has halted the resolution of disputes in nine parliamentary constituencies across the country, a move that has sparked backlash from political parties.
This directive, communicated on Tuesday, December 10, during a meeting with representatives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been met with resistance. Parties in the Ablekuma North Constituency, one of the affected areas, have strongly opposed the suspension, citing concerns about transparency and fairness.
On Monday, December 9, partial progress was made in Ablekuma North, with results collated from 219 polling stations. However, 61 polling stations remain unresolved.
Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor, former NDC Deputy General Secretary, criticized the EC’s decision, claiming it undermines the legitimacy of the electoral process. “Introducing such directives midway is unacceptable,” he argued.
The situation escalated as NDC supporters staged a protest at the Accra Regional EC office, blocking roads with an electricity pole after being denied entry.
The demonstrators demanded the declaration of results for the contentious constituency, further highlighting the high stakes and deep frustrations surrounding the ongoing disputes.
