Hon. Eric Opoku, MP for Asunafo South Constituency representing the NDC, has placed the blame for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) troubles squarely on their shoulders.
He points to internal chaos as the primary cause of their current struggles in Parliament.
Responding to NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahumudu Bawumia’s remarks during a campaign event in Nkawkaw, where Bawumia suggested the NDC should go to the polls if they want a majority Hon. Eric Opoku reminded him that the seats are tied at 136 each, resulting in a hung Parliament.
During an appearance on the ‘Ghana Se Sen’ Morning Show on Lawson TV/Radio, Hon. Eric Opoku questioned the relevance of Bawumia’s statement.
His comments followed the Supreme Court ruling that temporarily suspended Speaker Alban Bagbin’s declaration of four seats as vacant.
Hon. Eric Opoku criticized the Supreme Court’s involvement, arguing that it should not interfere in parliamentary matters.
“Nowhere in the world does the Supreme Court interfere in parliamentary proceedings. The law being interpreted by the Supreme Court originates from Parliament,” he stated emphatically to the host Kwame Tanko.
He maintained that the Speaker’s ruling remains valid until overturned, asserting that they will continue to hold the majority position until further notice.
He added, “We’ll see if the Supreme Court’s ruling takes effect tomorrow.”
With only two weeks left before Parliament’s recess until December 6, Opoku suggested that the NPP may be employing tactics to delay proceedings until then, potentially leading to the collapse of the 8th Parliament due to the impending general elections.
