Revoke Dr. Johnson Asiamah’s Appointment as BoG Governor Immediately!” – Manhyia South MP Urges Mahama

Dr. Asiamah’s Past Role in Bank Collapses Raises Questions About His Fitness for the Job

Story Highlights
  • Dr. Asiamah, as Second Deputy Governor, oversaw the supervision of banks during President Mahama’s first term
  • The collapse of banks led to job losses, wiped out savings, and caused significant financial distress
  • The people of Manhyia South demand the withdrawal of Dr. Asiamah’s appointment

Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Lawyer Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to revoke the appointment of Dr. Johnson Asiamah as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

President Mahama recently nominated Dr. Asiamah as the next Governor of the Bank of Ghana, subject to the approval of the Council of State. This nomination follows the acceptance of a prior request by the current Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, to proceed on leave ahead of his retirement on 31st March 2025.

Speaking during an interview on the Ghana Se Sen Morning Show with Kwame Tanko on LawsonTV, Lawyer Baffour Awuah expressed his concerns about Dr. Asiamah’s suitability for the role.

He highlighted that Dr. Asiamah, who served as the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana during President Mahama’s first term, was responsible for supervising banks during a period when several of them collapsed under his watch.

“Before Nana Akufo-Addo became President in 2017, banks were collapsing under Mahama. All the IMF reports and data from the banks indicated that there were problems. Dr. Asiamah had direct supervisory oversight, and the banks faced significant issues during that time. The NPP conducted investigations which revealed his role in the crisis,” Lawyer Baffour Awuah said.

He further questioned the rationale behind appointing Dr. Asiamah as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, considering the adverse impact of his tenure as Deputy Governor. “The banking issues caused people to lose their jobs, savings and loans institutions collapsed, and individuals lost their hard-earned money. Whether he worked well or not, this is his track record. What message are you sending by promoting him to this critical role?”

The MP also conveyed the sentiments of his constituents, emphasizing that they strongly oppose Dr. Asiamah’s appointment.

“The people of Manhyia South are calling for the revocation of Dr. Asiamah’s appointment if President Mahama truly cares about Ghana’s progress and wellbeing. The person who presided over a sector’s collapse is being brought back? Is this the reset we were looking for? I don’t believe this is what Ghanaians want,” he remarked.

He concluded by saying, “My mothers, fathers, siblings, and friends at Manhyia South have asked me to convey this message: they don’t want him as Governor of the Bank of Ghana.”
