Former Black Stars midfielder Sulley Muntari has delivered a harsh critique of the Ghana Premier League, labeling it as “a mess” and condemning the state of the competition.

Muntari, who began his career at Liberty Professionals in 2000 before making a name for himself in Europe, concluded his professional career with Hearts of Oak in the 2021/22 season.

During his time at the club, he helped secure both the President’s Cup and the MTN FA Cup but chose not to extend his contract.

In an interview with 3Sports, the 40-year-old former Inter Milan and AC Milan star described the state of the domestic league as a “big hole,” expressing his belief that it has no future without significant improvement. “Hearts fans and the president were amazing,” Muntari said, but quickly added, “The league is a big hole where they are dumping money. There is no future for the local league.”

He went on to lament the lack of progress and facilities in the league, pointing out the substandard conditions he encountered during his time playing. “I’m hoping I can get some funds and really help them. It’s a mess. When I was there, it was a mess. Maybe now it is worse,” Muntari continued. “If we don’t help these guys, we won’t get the top players.”

The midfielder also shared his frustration with the poor facilities, describing the changing rooms as “smelly” and lacking the respect they deserved. “I didn’t even want my laundry done. I would take it home. When you get into changing rooms, they smell bad. It is not just one team. Everybody.”

The current season of the Ghana Premier League is struggling without a headline sponsor or a broadcast rights holder, further highlighting the challenges the competition faces.

Muntari’s career included stints with Premier League clubs Portsmouth and Sunderland, and he was a key player for the Ghana national team from 2002 to 2014, helping the Black Stars qualify for World Cups in Germany (2006), South Africa (2010), and Brazil (2014).
