Student To Face Prosecution For Stabbing Teacher In The Eye
- The teacher lost his left eye in the attack.
- He emphasized that if no positive action is taken by next week, GNAT will decide on further steps
- Tanko also called for appropriate compensation for the injured teacher
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has given the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ghana Police Service a three-day ultimatum to prosecute a student who stabbed a teacher in Offinso.
The teacher, who was injured on November 8, lost his left eye in the attack.
Daniel Opoku, GNAT’s General Secretary, Thomas Musah Tanko, expressed outrage over the incident and warned that teachers may withdraw their services next week if authorities fail to act promptly.
Mr. Tanko explained that the teacher was attacked by a student after asking the student, who was loitering, to return to the classroom. Despite the severity of the situation, the teacher has yet to receive justice.
“The teacher has lost his left eye, meaning he will live the rest of his life with only one eye. Who will take care of his medical bills?” Tanko asked.
He emphasized that if no positive action is taken by next week, GNAT will decide on further steps, including potential industrial action. “If we don’t hear anything from the authorities by next week, whatever happens will be their responsibility. We will not stand by and allow ourselves to be treated like animals. Teachers are not animals,” he stated.
Tanko also called for appropriate compensation for the injured teacher. “Whatever compensation is due to the teacher must be given to him,” he said, adding that the student responsible must be held accountable.
He warned regional directors and education authorities that GNAT is closely monitoring the situation at the national level and will not let the matter rest.
“We will make sure this issue is not forgotten, and the duty bearers will have themselves to blame if they don’t act swiftly,” Tanko concluded.
