A young woman staged a striking protest by stripping down to her underwear at an Iranian university on Saturday, expressing her defiance against the country’s strict Islamic dress code.
Social media footage shared by the Amir Kabir Newsletter reveals security guards detaining her at Islamic Azad University.
The video has gained traction across Persian-language platforms, including Hengaw, IranWire, and Amnesty International.
University spokesperson Amir Mahjob stated on X that upon her arrival at the police station, it was determined she was under severe mental distress and had a mental disorder.
Details about her current situation remain unclear, but Hamshahri daily reports that she may be transferred to a mental health facility for further evaluation. The Amir Kabir newsletter has also alleged that she faced physical abuse during her arrest.
Amnesty International condemned the incident, urging Iranian authorities to release the student immediately and unconditionally, while ensuring her protection from torture and providing access to her family and legal counsel.
The rights group has documented serious abuses against women in Iranian prisons and has called for her safety.
This incident echoes the widespread protests that erupted in 2022 following the death of Mahsa Amini, an Iranian Kurdish woman detained for allegedly breaching hijab regulations.
