Former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has called on journalists to stop spreading misinformation about the upcoming December 7 elections.
Speaking at the peace pact signing ceremony in Accra on Thursday, November 28, Mahama underscored the critical role the media plays in ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process.
He urged reporters to maintain integrity and accuracy in their coverage, warning that any false reports regarding the election date could have serious consequences for Ghana’s democracy.
Mahama emphasized that providing voters with clear and correct information is crucial to enabling them to vote confidently and without confusion.
His comments come as fake news continues to spread, potentially impacting voter turnout and election results. The recent arrest of Kumasi-based media personality Oheneba Nana Asiedu, charged with spreading false news about the election process, highlights the growing concern over the issue.
Oheneba Nana Asiedu was released on bail after he falsely claimed that presidential candidates would be voted for on separate days, a statement swiftly debunked by authorities.
Mahama concluded his remarks by reaffirming his commitment to a peaceful election and urging all stakeholders to work together to protect the country’s democratic values.
