Story Highlights
  • Abdirahman Cirro secured 64% of the vote
  • Cirro emphasizes national unity
  • Cirro’s victory could lead to closer ties with Ethiopia

Abdirahman Cirro, leader of the opposition Waddani party, has triumphed over incumbent president Muse Bihi Abdi in the presidential election, according to the Somaliland Electoral Commission.

Cirro secured 64% of the vote, while Bihi garnered 35%. This victory sets the stage for a peaceful transfer of power in the breakaway Somali region, which has sought global recognition for decades.

Since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991, Somaliland has operated with de facto self-rule but has not gained formal recognition internationally, limiting its access to financial resources and travel opportunities for its citizens.

Cirro’s victory comes at a critical time as the region hopes for recognition, bolstered by a recent agreement with Ethiopia and support from international players, including the incoming U.S. administration.

In his victory speech, Cirro emphasized unity and the advancement of Somaliland’s nationhood.

Despite ongoing tensions with Somalia, particularly regarding a controversial agreement with Ethiopia, Cirro’s leadership may also open new diplomatic channels, possibly signaling a shift in foreign policy.

His win is seen as a chance for stronger ties with neighboring countries, including Ethiopia and China, as well as a potential rethinking of Somaliland’s relations with Taiwan.
