Despite the escalating security situation in Bawku, the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has affirmed its preparedness to hold elections in the Bawku Central constituency and neighboring areas on December 7, 2024.
This statement aims to ease concerns raised by some Ghanaians who feared that the ongoing ethnic clashes might prevent residents from casting their votes.
William Obeng Adarkwa, the Upper East Regional Director of the EC, emphasized that the Commission is working closely with security agencies to ensure peaceful elections.
He highlighted that the Ghana Police Service is in charge of maintaining security, and regular updates are being exchanged. Training for election officials is also ongoing to ensure they are equipped to handle the election process effectively.
Obeng Adarkwa also appealed to the people of Bawku to foster peace, ensuring that election materials and personnel can be deployed as required.
The unrest in the region, sparked by the return of a contested chief, has disrupted daily life, with services like education, water, and electricity affected.
A curfew has been imposed to help maintain order amid the tensions.
