The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to approve the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, popularly known as the anti-gay bill, before his term ends.

Speaking at the launch of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s Bicentennial Anniversary at Osu Castle on Sunday, December 22, 2024, Dr. Kwakye emphasized the importance of the legislation, calling it a pivotal moment for the President to solidify his legacy.

“This bill is our birthday gift this year, symbolizing the preservation of African values through the gospel,” Dr. Kwakye said, urging the President to “make our joy complete” by assenting to the bill, which has already received parliamentary approval and survived legal challenges.

The Supreme Court recently dismissed two petitions contesting the bill’s constitutionality, clearing a major hurdle. Passed by Parliament on February 28, 2024, the bill continues to stir national debate, with proponents praising its protection of traditional family values and critics denouncing it as a violation of human rights.

President Akufo-Addo, who had previously deferred action pending legal resolutions, now faces growing calls to enact the controversial legislation.
