Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay has expressed how Diego Maradona has been a constant inspiration for him since joining Napoli, a club where the legendary figure made history by leading them to the Italian title in 1990.
The 27-year-old, who transferred from Manchester United this summer, has made an immediate impact at Napoli, contributing two goals and one assist in the league and playing a vital role in Antonio Conte’s squad, regardless of the tactical setup.
“Maradona is undoubtedly the most iconic footballer to have ever played the game,” McTominay said during a media conference ahead of Scotland’s Nations League match against Croatia. “Walking into the stadium was surreal, knowing I’m in the presence of a footballing legend. The love for him in Naples is incredible.”
McTominay, along with fellow Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour, who also recently moved to Naples from Brighton, is making efforts to learn Italian, picking up useful phrases as they go.
He expressed confidence that his move to Italy from his boyhood club was the right decision, noting, “It’s not easy to go abroad, but it’s been quite seamless for me. It was a significant choice, but I had to ask myself, ‘Do I want to take this step?’ There’s no looking back now.”
Reflecting on his career, McTominay added, “I’ve never regretted any decisions in my life, and I intend to keep it that way.”
Scotland head coach Steve Clarke has praised McTominay’s success in Italy, noting the importance of players excelling in top leagues abroad. “Having players like Scott making an impact in Serie A helps us,” Clarke said. “It’s not always easy to adapt to the tactical demands of Serie A, yet he’s hit the ground running.
He’s been an outstanding player for me over the last five years, regardless of the position I’ve put him in, even when playing out of position at center-back.”
