Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, the Convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, has highlighted that policemen are a significant hurdle in the fight against illegal mining (galamsey) in Ghana. He revealed that some police officers have been compromised in efforts to curb the menace.

Speaking on the Ghana ‘Se Sen’ Morning Show on Lawson TV/Radio with Kwame Tanko Dr. Ashigbey emphasized that this issue is why his coalition has called for a State of Emergency, enabling the military to step in and join the fight.

He recounted an operation where a changfan was discovered at the home of a police commander, who claimed to have seized it.

Dr. Ashigbey and the coalition are also urging presidential and parliamentary candidates to take a firm stance on the galamsey issue, vowing to organize a collective movement to demand immediate action, regardless of the election cycle.

He questioned what legacy President Akufo-Addo would leave behind if the current crisis remains unresolved, stressing the long-term environmental damage to the country’s lands.
