  • Mohammed had been arrested and brought to court
  • He faced charges of offensive conduct and breaches of the peace

Awal Mohammed, an independent parliamentary candidate for the Madina constituency, has been discharged by the Adentan Circuit Court after the police withdrew their case against him.

This followed allegations that he was featured on campaign posters alongside John Mahama.

Mohammed had been arrested and brought to court after Abdul Razak Hussein, the Madina constituency secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), filed a complaint against him.

He faced charges of offensive conduct and breaches of the peace but pleaded not guilty before presiding Judge Mrs. Sedinam Awo Kwadam.

Prosecutor Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo informed the court that both Hussein and Mohammed are residents of the Madina area.

The court learned that Mohammed, a former NDC member, had decided to run as an independent candidate when the Electoral Commission opened nominations for parliamentary candidates.

The prosecution stated that Hussein had received numerous complaints from party members about Mohammed’s activities, specifically regarding posters featuring him alongside NDC presidential candidate John Mahama displayed prominently throughout the constituency.

Concerned party members, especially the youth, feared that these posters could disrupt peace in the community.

Following the complaint, the police invited Mohammed to provide a caution statement. He denied putting up the posters but acknowledged using the NDC flag bearer’s name during his public campaigns.
