NPP Knew Mahama Would Win Months Ahead – Nana Akomea Opens Up
Internal polls in early 2024 showed Mahama leading by 10 points, but dwindling voter turnout left the NPP grappling with a historic defeat
- NPP internal polls in February 2024 showed Mahama ahead by 10 percentage points
- By October, the lead had reduced to 2 points, sparking NPP optimism
- Over 2 million voters abstained, significantly impacting the final outcome
Nana Akomea, Vice Chairman of the Dr. Bawumia 2024 Campaign team, has disclosed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) foresaw John Dramani Mahama’s victory months before the 2024 general elections.
Speaking in an interview, Akomea revealed that internal polls conducted as early as February 2024 showed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate leading by a significant margin of 10 percentage points.
“In February and March, the NDC was leading by about 10 percentage points, which was quite concerning,” Akomea said. However, by September and October, the gap had narrowed to just 2 percentage points, boosting the NPP’s confidence.
Despite the encouraging trend, Akomea noted that voter apathy and internal discontent ultimately dashed their hopes. He emphasized the need to investigate why over 2 million registered voters abstained, a factor he believes contributed significantly to their loss.
The Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensa, declared the results on December 9, 2024, confirming Mahama’s decisive victory with 56.55% of the votes (6,328,397). Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia followed with 41.61% (4,657,304).
The NPP is now focused on analyzing the factors behind their defeat, particularly the disengagement of a massive section of their voter base.
