The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is set to expand its free dialysis programme, aiming to provide broader access to essential, life-saving treatment for kidney patients across the country.

As part of this initiative, the NHIA will secure more dialysis machines and necessary consumables for healthcare centers nationwide, enhancing the programme’s reach.

This expansion aligns with the government’s wider strategy to improve access to critical healthcare services for all citizens.

Dr. Victor Bampoe, the CEO of NHIA, shared that the initiative’s goal is to bring more kidney disease patients under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

“The free dialysis programme was originally launched by the previous government, with 20 centers providing this service at no cost. Our priority now is to expand and secure sustainable funding, so dialysis will be covered as comprehensively as any other medical treatment under the NHIS,” Dr. Bampoe explained.

This expansion is expected to alleviate the financial burden on patients and their families, many of whom struggle with the high costs associated with dialysis in Ghana.
