A newly formed insurgent group, Lakurawas, launched a violent attack on the rural community of Mera in Kebbi state, northwest Nigeria, killing at least 15 people and injuring several others.
The assailants, riding on motorbikes, targeted the village after attempting to steal livestock. When villagers resisted, gunfire erupted, leaving 15 dead and two insurgents killed in the clash.
Lakurawas, composed of militant herding communities along the Nigeria-Niger border, emerged after the July 2023 coup in Niger.
This marks their first known attack in the region. The government, led by Deputy Governor Abubakar Tafida, is stepping up security efforts to curb further violence.
