- Akandoh questions the excessive cost of maintaining Ghana’s ambulance fleet
- The Health Minister-designate vows to thoroughly investigate the contract if confirmed by Parliament
- The pledge highlights growing concerns over financial accountability in the health sector’s emergency services
Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Health Minister-designate, has pledged to investigate the controversial $77 million ambulance maintenance contract if confirmed by Parliament.
During his vetting on Friday, January 31, 2025, Mr. Akandoh expressed alarm over the terms of the agreement between the Ministry of Health and the company tasked with maintaining Ghana’s ambulance fleet.
“I’ve reviewed the details of the spare parts and maintenance contract. If the committee approves my nomination, I am committed to conducting a thorough investigation into this matter,” he stated.
Mr. Akandoh also revealed that the same company had previously secured a $41 million contract to procure 307 ambulances. He questioned the rationale behind signing a five-year maintenance contract for $77 million, nearly double the procurement cost, calling it financially unjustifiable given the expected rate of vehicle wear and tear.
“The disparity between the cost of procuring the ambulances and maintaining them is troubling. This requires a detailed probe to ensure transparency and accountability,” he added.
His remarks have reignited public concerns about procurement irregularities and financial accountability in the health sector. Civil society groups have long criticized the cost-effectiveness of Ghana’s emergency medical services investments.
Mr. Akandoh’s commitment to investigate the deal raises hopes for reforms that will prioritize value for money in government contracts.
