A devastating fire engulfed a major furniture warehouse on Spintex Road in Accra on Monday night, completely destroying the building and causing significant losses.
The fire broke out around 9 p.m., prompting an immediate response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), with the Kasapreko Command being the first to arrive at the scene.
Thanks to their quick action, firefighters managed to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby warehouses, although the warehouse itself suffered extensive damage.
The facility housed highly flammable materials, including foam and upholstery, which fueled the fire and complicated firefighting efforts.
To tackle the flames, the GNFS utilized foam concentrate, a specialized firefighting agent suitable for dealing with flammable materials.
In a Facebook livestream, Alex King Nartey, Public Relations Officer for the GNFS, outlined the difficulties presented by the fire and praised the coordinated efforts of the firefighters in averting a larger catastrophe.
ADO Nartey noted that the initial crew from the Kasapreko Command quickly assessed the situation’s severity and called for additional support. “Our team from Kasapreko arrived at the scene and requested reinforcements from various stations, including GNFS Headquarters, Trade Fair, University of Ghana, and Abelemkpe, to combat the fire. It appears to be a sofa warehouse, and foam concentrate was utilized to manage the blaze.”
Reinforcements arrived promptly from four additional GNFS units, which helped prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent warehouses and nearby properties, thereby averting a potentially larger disaster in the commercial area.
After a challenging three-hour effort, the combined team successfully extinguished the fire around 11:30 p.m.
