Manchester City has expressed its shock and disgust after striker Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw was subjected to racist and misogynistic abuse following the club’s Women’s Super League defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.

The club confirmed that the offensive content has been reported to the appropriate authorities, and an investigation will be conducted. Shaw, 28, chose not to publicly share the abusive messages in order to avoid giving attention to the individuals responsible.

In a statement, Manchester City made it clear that any form of discrimination, whether online or in stadiums, is completely unacceptable. “Bunny has decided not to share the messages publicly so as not to give the oxygen of publicity to the vile individuals who sent them,” the club said.

Shaw, who made her 100th appearance for the club as a substitute during the 4-3 home loss to Arsenal, has been a standout performer for City, scoring 86 goals and winning the Club’s Player of the Year award for the past two seasons.

The club reaffirmed its full support for Shaw in the wake of the abuse she endured.
