Majority Leader Afenyo-Markin Calls for Respect of Supreme Court Ruling on Parliamentary Seats

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged both the Minority and Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to respect the recent Supreme Court ruling concerning four parliamentary seats that were previously declared vacant.

On October 17, Speaker Bagbin declared the seats of four Members of Parliament—Andrew Asiamah (Fomena), Kwadjo Asante (Suhum), Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central)—vacant, prompting significant debate within the House.

In response, Afenyo-Markin filed a petition with the Supreme Court, seeking to reverse the Speaker’s ruling and reinstate the affected MPs.

His appeal underscored the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) commitment to resolving disputes through “peaceful and lawful” means amid rising tensions in the legislature.

On November 12, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo led a Supreme Court panel that ruled in favor of Afenyo-Markin, effectively overturning the Speaker’s decision.

Following the ruling, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the importance of upholding democratic principles, mutual respect, and adherence to the rule of law in Ghana’s governance.

He encouraged all parties to embrace these values to ensure the stability and integrity of the parliamentary process.

“Democracy requires decency, and that is the path that the NPP chose. We expect our colleagues from the other side and the Speaker to respect the court’s decision. Ghana stands as a beacon in Africa, and we must cherish that,” he stated.

“We should all respect the decision. Our priority is peace in the country, and that is what we advocate for and have achieved.”
