President-elect John Dramani Mahama has called for transparency and accountability from the Transition Team as it prepares to assume power from the outgoing administration.

The call comes amid allegations of last-minute government recruitments and the disbursement of GH₵240 million to a business partner of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

These concerns were raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Transition Team during a joint meeting on Wednesday, December 13, citing potential financial and operational burdens on the incoming administration.

“There are a few signals that have been raised with respect to some contracts at the last minute that will commit the new government. I hope that the joint transition team will deal with it,” Mahama stated.

He also highlighted concerns over alleged mass recruitments into various agencies, which he described as a potential liability for his government.

However, Fatimatu Abubakar, spokesperson for the government’s transition team, refuted the allegations, expressing surprise and questioning the basis of the claims.

“I was so surprised when I heard those comments. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I searched online to check if there were any formal statements. Until I realised that some meetings were granted, they did not reflect the meetings held on Wednesday,” Abubakar stated.

She emphasized the commitment of both President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and President-elect Mahama to ensure a smooth transition process in the interest of the country, pointing out that such allegations risk undermining the goodwill necessary for a peaceful handover.
