Low-Interest Loans for Farmers, Mahama Announces

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a significant initiative to bolster Ghana’s agricultural sector, stating his government’s commitment to repositioning the Ghana Export–Import Bank (GEXIM) to play a pivotal role in transforming the country’s agricultural landscape.

Speaking at the launch of the “Feed Ghana Programme” held last Saturday, April 12, 2025, in Techiman within the Bono East Region, President Mahama outlined plans for GEXIM to offer concessional loans to farmers and agricultural enterprises. This program is designed to provide crucial support to farmers, enabling them to increase production and significantly enhance Ghana’s food security.

During his address at the launch, President Mahama emphasized innovative approaches to agricultural financing, stating, “Financing remains a significant obstacle to agricultural investment. To overcome this, we will strategically refocus the Exim Bank to provide concessional loans specifically targeted at farmers and agricultural businesses, particularly those involved in export and value addition. Furthermore, the Government will develop strategically located agro-processing zones, equipped with essential infrastructure such as irrigation systems, reliable road networks, power supply, and warehousing facilities, to attract private sector investment in the processing of agricultural produce.”

The “Feed Ghana Programme” is a comprehensive initiative with the core objectives of significantly boosting agricultural production to adequately feed the nation’s population, provide a consistent supply of raw materials for agro-processing factories, and generate substantial employment opportunities for Ghana’s growing youth.

The program encompasses various sub-projects focusing on key agricultural sectors, including vegetables, grains, poultry, oil palm, tubers, and other import substitutes. This strategic focus aims to reduce Ghana’s reliance on imported food products and facilitate a transition towards an economy with a strong export orientation.

Speaking to members of the media following the launch event, the Acting Chief Executive of GEXIM, Hon. Sylvester Mensah, affirmed the Bank’s readiness and commitment to actively support the “Feed Ghana Programme.” He emphasized that the program’s objectives align perfectly with GEXIM’s immediate priorities, which include increasing domestic food production, supporting the growth of agro-processing industries, and investing in projects that offer significant job creation opportunities for Ghanaians in regions like Ashanti.
