Mahama: Peace Pact is Empty Without Real Action
Mahama Urges Concrete Steps to Back Peace Commitments and Ensure Trust in the 2024 Elections
- Mahama stresses that Peace Pact is ineffective without concrete actions
- Past events, like the 2020 elections, have raised doubts about the sincerity of peace efforts
- He urges stakeholders to align actions with promises to maintain Ghana’s peaceful democratic image
Former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has emphasized that the Peace Pact for the 2024 general elections will be meaningless unless accompanied by real action.
Speaking at the Peace Pact signing ceremony in Accra on November 28, 2024, Mahama stressed that mere words cannot ensure peace. He warned that mistrust and insincerity among stakeholders could derail the efforts to maintain peaceful elections.
Mahama pointed to past events, including the 2020 elections and the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, as examples that have raised doubts about the authenticity of peace commitments.
He urged all parties to match their words with meaningful actions to uphold Ghana’s reputation as a peaceful democracy.
“While it’s commendable to commit to peace, these pledges will mean nothing if they’re undermined by mistrust or inconsistency,” Mahama stated.
“If past actions do not align with promises, we risk sabotaging the peace process, and the pact could end up as a hollow gesture.”
