President-elect John Dramani Mahama has formally met with outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to inaugurate the 2024 National Transition Team, marking a significant step in Ghana’s democratic transition process.

The meeting, held on Wednesday, December 11, at the Jubilee House in Accra, officially began the peaceful and organised handover of power from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). This marks a crucial moment in the nation’s history.

The National Transition Team, a constitutional body designated to manage the power transition, will ensure a smooth transfer by briefing the incoming government on key state matters, facilitating access to essential government data, and coordinating the formal inauguration of the President-elect.

The meeting between the two leaders highlights Ghana’s commitment to upholding its strong democratic values, where both outgoing and incoming administrations collaborate to ensure continuity in governance.

In his address, President-elect Mahama reaffirmed his dedication to fostering unity and stability as the NDC prepares to take office.

He shared, “The President has briefed me on the security situation, both internal and external, and on key economic matters. The transitional teams will delve deeper into these issues, and we will work together for the good of Ghana to ensure a seamless transition.”

Outgoing President Akufo-Addo expressed his full support for the transition, emphasising the importance of cooperation and continuity.

“I assure Mr. Mahama and his team of my full backing and that of my government to ensure his administration starts off in the best possible condition,” Akufo-Addo stated.

This collaborative approach reinforces Ghana’s strong democratic tradition and commitment to a peaceful transfer of power.
