Former President John Mahama is thrilled by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant, viewing it as a positive sign for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the elections.

The ruling comes after a motion by former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, who sought to vacate the seats of four MPs running as independent candidates in the upcoming elections. During the session on October 17, the Speaker officially declared three of the seats vacant.

This shift alters the balance of Ghana’s hung parliament, which had slightly favored the governing NPP, supported by Independent MP Andrew Amoako Asiamah.

With the NDC now holding a majority, Mahama expressed optimism for the party’s prospects in the December 7 elections, calling the moment historic.

Mahama emphasized that the NDC’s new majority is a divine sign, stating, “Even before we have cast a single ballot, the NDC has become the majority.” However, he urged party members to solidify this advantage by performing well in the elections, which he believes will be pivotal for Ghana’s future.

Reflecting on his campaign, Mahama noted that citizens from ten regions are united in their call for change. He reiterated that the NDC previously secured a majority in the 2020 elections but lost four constituencies through what he described as fraudulent means by the NPP.

He concluded with confidence, saying, “What man has taken from you, God will restore to you,” indicating his belief that the NDC is set to reclaim its rightful majority and win the upcoming elections.
