John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has linked the disappointing performance of Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, to what he describes as the worsening state of the country under the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

Mahama’s remarks come after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, marking a significant blow to the team, which has long been a symbol of national pride for Ghanaians.

Speaking during a mini-rally at the Akim Oda lorry station on Tuesday, November 19, as part of his five-day tour of the Eastern Region, Mahama urged Ghanaians to vote for change in the upcoming elections to restore hope, progress, and the glory of the Black Stars.

“We have lost so much. Even our beloved Black Stars, once a source of pride and entertainment, are now at their lowest point,” Mahama said.

“For the past 20 years, the Black Stars have always participated in the AFCON. But now, we couldn’t even make it through the qualifiers. We have allowed ourselves to be overtaken by countries like Sudan—a war-torn nation—that has qualified, while the Black Stars have failed. This is the result of the poor governance we’ve endured for the past eight years.”

Mahama emphasized that democracy offers Ghanaians the opportunity to make a change every four years, and the upcoming election on December 7 provides the chance to restore progress to the country.

“Democracy gives us the chance to change our leadership every four years. So, let’s seize this opportunity on December 7 to make a peaceful change for the betterment of our country,” he added.
