President John Dramani Mahama has reassured Ghanaians that his administration has no intention of canceling the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

Instead, he emphasized that his government would focus on enhancing the program to ensure its sustainability and improve its quality.

In his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) during his second term, delivered on Thursday, 27th February, in Parliament, Mahama addressed concerns surrounding the Free SHS initiative, which was introduced by the previous administration.

“We recognize the importance of education in the development of our nation, and the Free SHS policy is a key part of this vision. My administration is committed to ensuring that this policy not only continues but is improved to benefit more students and provide a better learning environment,” President Mahama stated.

He acknowledged the challenges faced by the current system, including overcrowding in schools and resource constraints, but assured the nation that his government would take necessary steps to address these issues.

Mahama revealed that his government would work to improve infrastructure in schools, recruit more qualified teachers, and ensure the provision of adequate learning materials to enhance the overall quality of education.

“We cannot allow the promise of free education to become a burden on our students and teachers. We will invest in our education sector, improve the delivery of services, and ensure that every Ghanaian child receives quality education,” he said.

The president also assured Ghanaians that his administration would engage with key stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and education experts, to find innovative solutions to the challenges facing the Free SHS program.

Mahama’s commitment to improving Free SHS was met with applause from members of Parliament, as he reiterated the importance of education as a fundamental tool for the country’s growth and prosperity.
