Pop icons Madonna and Sir Elton John have publicly ended their long-standing feud, sparked by Sir Elton’s repeated accusations of Madonna lip-syncing during her performances.

The reconciliation occurred after Madonna attended Sir Elton’s performance on Saturday Night Live (SNL) and approached him backstage.

According to Madonna’s Instagram post, Sir Elton’s immediate response was “forgive me,” which led to the immediate breakdown of the “wall between them.”

Madonna, 66, expressed that she had admired the 78-year-old Sir Elton since her teenage years, noting that seeing him perform in high school significantly impacted her life. She admitted that his public disapproval as an artist had been hurtful over the decades.

The tension between the two music legends originated in the early 2000s. In 2004, Sir Elton made disparaging remarks about Madonna’s nomination for Best Live Act at the Q Awards, questioning the validity of live performances involving lip-syncing and suggesting drastic consequences for artists who do so. Madonna’s team consistently denied she lip-synced.

Sir Elton continued his criticism in subsequent years, including a 2012 comment about Madonna’s chances of winning a Golden Globe over him. After Madonna won for her song “Masterpiece,” she humorously expressed hope that Sir Elton would speak to her again.

In her recent Instagram post, Madonna hinted at a potential future collaboration, revealing that Sir Elton had written a song for her and expressed a desire to work together.

Responding to Madonna’s post, Sir Elton thanked her for her forgiveness and acknowledged his “big mouth.” He expressed regret for his past comments, especially considering Madonna’s “ground-breaking work” that paved the way for many female artists. He also emphasized his distress over divisiveness in the world and his hope for positive collaborations in the future.
