The government has officially dismissed all criminal charges against Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the party’s Communications Officer, Anthony Kwaku Boahen.

Attorney-General Dominic Ayine announced that the legal proceedings, which began in December 2019, have come to an end.

The two NDC officials had been on trial over a controversial audio recording in which Ofosu Ampofo was allegedly heard discussing plans to incite violence and create unrest in the country to blame the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The recording reportedly outlined plans for kidnappings, arson, and verbal attacks on public figures, including the Chairman of the National Peace Council, Prof. Emmanuel Asante, and Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa.

Though both Ofosu Ampofo and Boahen faced charges of conspiracy to cause harm, the case was ultimately dismissed as the government chose to withdraw from the trial. Ofosu Ampofo had also been facing additional charges of assault against public officers, which he denied.
