Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has labeled President-elect John Mahama’s one-term presidency as a rare chance to implement crucial constitutional reforms aimed at enhancing governance in Ghana.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu echoed the views of several experts who believe that Mahama’s position as a one-term leader offers the perfect opportunity for a thorough constitutional review.

“With no future political ambitions to consider, Mahama can take bold steps without fear of accusations of self-interest,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stated on December 28. “He has a unique opportunity to lead Ghana towards a more development-oriented constitution that improves governance.”

This statement comes as the Constitution Review Consultative Committee has submitted its proposals to President Akufo-Addo, suggesting major amendments to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu also highlighted the historical significance of the current constitution, which was initially created to stabilize the country after a period of unrest. Now that Ghana is more stable, he believes it’s time to focus on reforms that will propel the nation towards sustainable development.

Despite acknowledging the challenges Mahama may face in the early stages of his presidency, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu remains optimistic, suggesting that after the first few months—typically filled with cabinet formation and the national budget—Mahama could begin the constitutional review process by mid-year.
