Kofi Adams, the Member of Parliament for Buem, has vehemently criticized the government’s approach to addressing the persistent issue of illegal mining, known as galamsey, in Ghana.

During an interview on a political discussion show, Adams accused the New Patriotic Party-led administration of not only failing to tackle the problem but also demonstrating a lack of commitment to its resolution.

Adams argued that the government’s actions, or inactions, concerning galamsey suggest a disinterest in genuinely addressing the issue.

He cited several instances from the government’s term in office to support his claim, including the statement by former Minister of Trade, Alan Kyerematen, that there was no benefit in prosecuting Chinese galamsey queen, Aisha Huang.

Furthermore, Adams referred to the revelations of Professor Frimpong Boateng, who claimed that he warned President Akufo-Addo about the late Sir John’s involvement in galamsey. Despite this, Sir John remained in office until his passing.

Adams’ criticism highlights the growing concern among Ghanaians about the government’s handling of the galamsey menace, which has had devastating environmental and economic consequences.
