Kofi Adams Demands the Big Fish Be Brought to Justice Over Galamsey.
Former President Mahama's Staunch Position on Illegal Mining Gains Support as Calls for Accountability Intensify
- Mahama has maintained a clear stance against illegal mining since 2016
- Adams emphasizes the need to target influential figures behind galamsey
- The current administration is urged to take responsibility
Kofi Adams, the Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency, has reaffirmed former President John Mahama’s steadfast opposition to illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
As the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer for the upcoming 2024 elections, Mahama has consistently advocated for strict measures against those involved in these unlawful activities, prioritizing the need for significant reform.
In an interview on Mr Adams emphasized Mahama’s clear stance: it is imperative to identify, arrest, and prosecute the influential figures orchestrating these operations to effectively tackle the escalating crisis.
He pointed out that Mahama’s commitment not only highlights the urgency of accountability in the exploitation of Ghana’s natural resources but also addresses the detrimental environmental impacts and the social fallout on local communities.
Adams criticized the current government’s handling of the galamsey issue, accusing them of evading responsibility and shifting blame onto opposition parties rather than confronting the problem head-on.
He called for the government to engage proactively in the fight against illegal mining, rather than deflecting criticism.
“Instead of passing the buck, the government needs to collaborate with communities, law enforcement, and environmental agencies to develop a comprehensive strategy,” he urged. Adams believes that a united front is crucial for effective intervention, advocating for policies that empower local stakeholders to take part in safeguarding their resources.
“I don’t think John Mahama has changed his position on galamsey. He’s been very consistent from 2016 till date. Perhaps, the only new thing he has said is that he asked for the big men behind it to be arrested and not the small boys,” he asserted.
He emphasized the need for justice that targets the root causes of the galamsey crisis rather than merely its symptoms.
