Kidney Patients Celebrate Bawumia’s Announcement of Free Dialysis Under NHIS Starting December 1
Bawumia’s announcement is a game-changer for those struggling with the high cost of kidney disease treatment
- Starting December 1, 2024, kidney patients under the National Health Insurance Scheme will receive dialysis treatment at no cost.
- The new policy aims to ease the financial burden of costly dialysis sessions
- Following a successful pilot program for children and seniors, the initiative will now cover all kidney patients enrolled in NHIS
In a heartening move, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has declared that from December 1, 2024, the government will provide free dialysis treatment for all kidney patients enrolled in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Addressing a stakeholder meeting in the Old Tafo Pankrono Constituency, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the government’s unwavering support for patients, ensuring they receive vital healthcare.
This announcement follows a successful pilot program earlier this year for children and seniors, making the new policy a much-anticipated extension.
Reacting to the news, kidney patients across the country have expressed overwhelming joy.
President of the Kidney Patients Association, Kwadwo Baffour Ahenkora, in an interview on the Lawson TV/Radio Ghana Se Se Sen Morning Show said this development is a long-awaited relief.
Mr Baffour Ahenkora, who has battled kidney disease for a decade, explained that despite numerous meetings on the issue, no positive action had been taken until now.
Having personally experienced the financial strain of dialysis, which costs around Ghc 500 per session three times a week, he shared the hardships of affording the necessary treatments and medications.
“Without God’s intervention, survival is uncertain,” he lamented, reflecting on the immense financial toll kidney disease has taken on him.
With Dr. Bawumia’s promise, Mr Baffour Ahenkora and many other patients now hold hope for a future where dialysis is no longer a financial burden.
