Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, is leading a specialized team of police officers—including those in operations, investigations, and intelligence—to Bawku in the Upper East Region to evaluate the escalating security tensions.
This urgent intervention follows a violent clash between the youth and police that resulted in the death of Fuseini Iddrisu. Five others, including a police officer and an immigration officer, sustained gunshot wounds and are receiving medical care.
Although a joint security operation by the Ghana Police Service and Ghana Armed Forces briefly restored calm on April 9, fresh violence erupted on April 10. Agitated youth reportedly attacked and later set fire to the home of the area’s Member of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, in the Wiidi suburb of Bawku.
According to reports, the unrest began with stone-throwing that caused damage to parts of the residence and escalated into arson the next morning.
The youth’s actions are believed to be in protest of the alleged police killing of a young man.
The Ghana Police Service, in a statement released on April 10, confirmed the IGP’s visit will also include condolence visits to the deceased’s family, checking on the injured, and supporting affected officers.
The Police have reaffirmed their commitment to working with the Ghana Armed Forces, traditional leaders, and other key stakeholders to ensure sustained peace and order in Bawku.
