IGP Sends PIPS Team to Yamfo After Tragic Death of Nurse
IGP Orders Thorough Investigation Into Nurse's Death Amidst Rising Tensions in Yamfo

- The Inspector-General of Police sends a team to Yamfo to investigate the death of nurse Richard Antwi Agyei
- Angry residents clashed with police
- A pathologist will conduct a post-mortem to determine the cause of death
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has dispatched a team from the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Bureau (PIPS) to Yamfo and surrounding communities in the Ahafo Region to investigate the tragic death of Richard Antwi Agyei, a 30-year-old nurse at the Yamfo Health Centre.
The PIPS team, responsible for investigating allegations of police misconduct and ensuring accountability within the Ghana Police Service, was deployed after reports that Agyei had been allegedly assaulted by officers following his arrest at a known site for smoking and trading Indian hemp in the area. Agyei later died at the Yamfo Health Centre.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, April 4, also saw another local resident wounded by military personnel during an effort to control a protest by angry youths.
The protest followed news of Agyei’s death, with irate residents storming the Yamfo Police Station, where the accused officers sought refuge. The youth reportedly attempted to set the police station on fire in their outrage.
Last Friday, the PIPS team interviewed key individuals, including Nana Gyamfi Kumanini, leader of the Yamfo Youth Association, the Station Officer, eyewitnesses, and the Medical Doctor at the Yamfo Health Centre. The suspects were also questioned, and the family of the deceased provided an official statement in Kumasi.
The team has engaged a pathologist to conduct a post-mortem examination, which will help determine the exact cause of death. A family representative will be present during the procedure. Once the examination is concluded, the body will be released to the family for burial.
The findings from the post-mortem will be included in the broader investigation, which will be submitted to the Attorney General’s Office for legal advice on potential charges.
