ICC Issues Arrest Warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant Over Alleged War Crimes
International Criminal Court targets Israeli leaders for actions in Gaza amid ongoing humanitarian crisis
- ICC issues arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity
- Charges include starvation as a warfare method, murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts
- The warrants come amid Israel's year-long military offensive in Gaza
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Palestinian territories, including Gaza.
According to the ICC’s Pre-Trial Chamber I, the charges stem from acts committed between October 8, 2023, and May 20, 2024. The alleged crimes include the use of starvation as a method of warfare and inhumane acts such as murder and persecution.
The court unanimously rejected Israel’s legal challenges under the Rome Statute, clearing the way for the warrants.
This decision comes amid a prolonged Israeli military offensive in Gaza that has reportedly killed over 44,000 Palestinians, injured more than 103,000, and displaced nearly the entire population.
Gaza continues to suffer from severe shortages of basic necessities due to an ongoing blockade, with the population on the brink of starvation.
The ICC’s action marks a significant legal and political challenge for Israel and its leadership on the global stage.
