  • He maintains that his remark caused no harm and dismisses any threats made against him.

Lawyer Maurice Ampaw, a private legal practitioner, has clarified his earlier remarks about leaving Ghana if John Dramani Mahama is re-elected.

According to him, his statement was purely political and not to be taken literally.

Mr. Ampaw explained that he used the comment as a campaign tool, emphasizing that he has spent his entire life in Ghana and would never consider leaving for another country—especially not Togo, which he perceives as less developed.

Speaking with Kwame Tanko on the Lawson TV/Radio Ghana Se Sen Morning Show, he reiterated that his remark was made in the heat of the 2024 election campaign.

“A lot of people made statements calling for others to be banned or even for schools to be burnt, but they were all political gimmicks,” he said.

Maurice Ampaw, who previously stated in an interview with Kwame Tanko that he would relocate to Togo if Mahama is re-elected, now insists he owes no one an explanation. He also questioned why he wasn’t asked why he specifically mentioned Togo.

“Even if Ghana deteriorates, Togo is nowhere near Ghana in terms of development. Why would I go to Togo, an NDC stronghold? There is nothing in Togo that excites me enough to move there,” he asserted.

He further revealed that some people had threatened him over his comment, but he dismissed them as mere jokes.

Maurice Ampaw maintained that his statement neither caused fear and panic, nor did it insult anyone or lead to financial loss for the country—therefore, no one has grounds to take action against him.
