Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has firmly stated that he has no intention of returning to football, despite occasionally missing the sport.
Reflecting on the fallout from the 2018 investigative exposé by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, Nyantakyi shared in an emotional interview on Lawson TV/Radio Ghana Se Sen Morning Show that he has let go of any bitterness from the past and moved forward with his life.
“I don’t have bitterness in me. Whatever happened has happened. If you keep thinking about it, it can destroy you,” Nyantakyi said.
While he admitted he sometimes misses football, he emphasized that his focus is now on supporting Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential campaign. If Bawumia wins the December 7 election and offers him the position of Sports Minister, Nyantakyi stated that he would consider many factors before making a decision.
Reflecting on the corruption charges that stemmed from the exposé, Nyantakyi expressed confidence in his innocence. He explained that although the documentary gained widespread support, he believed it lacked merit, especially since FIFA and the courts had cleared him of any wrongdoing.
In June 2018, Nyantakyi was filmed accepting $65,000 in cash from an undercover journalist posing as a sponsor for the Ghana FA.
This footage, broadcast by BBC Africa’s Africa Eye, led to his dismissal from prominent football positions, including FIFA Council Member and CAF 1st Vice President.
