- The NPP communicator pledges to be more mindful of his public statements moving forward
Benjamin Gyewu-Appiah, a communications team member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has retracted his earlier statement about burning himself if John Dramani Mahama wins the 2024 election.
Speaking from an undisclosed location, Gyewu-Appiah clarified that the comment was intended as a political expression to rally support for the NPP, not a serious threat.
The communicator explained that his remark was made during a heated moment, sparked by doubts over Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s chances of securing a strong vote. Confident in Bawumia’s prospects, Gyewu-Appiah stated the comment was meant to energize party supporters ahead of the election.
Expressing regret, Gyewu-Appiah acknowledged the negative impact his words had on his family, friends, and party officials, who grew concerned for his safety. He assured the public that suicide was never his intention and called on Ghanaians to forgive him for what he now describes as a “political gimmick.”
Gyewu-Appiah also pointed out that similar hyperbolic remarks by politicians often go unnoticed and admitted he didn’t expect his statement to be taken seriously. Going forward, he vowed to be more cautious with his public statements.
