Kojo Manuel, who won the Best MC/Hypeman category at the 2024 Ghana DJ Awards alongside MC Portfolio, publicly questioned the decision to award a joint title, stating that he believed he should have been the sole winner of the category.
Speaking in an interview, Kojo said: “I don’t believe there’s anything like a tie. I don’t think Ghana would have an election and say the NPP and NDC won. I never understand the notion behind the tie and I haven’t had any official statement from the Ghana DJ Awards on why that happened.” He added, “Everybody knows the work I’ve done the year under review, so I don’t know what you’re comparing it to. Unfortunately, we’ve gotten to a point where you win an award and you have to explain yourself.”
In response to Kojo’s comments, Merqury Quaye shared his disappointment with the YFM presenter’s remarks, saying, “I am very disappointed in Kojo Manuel for his comments on this matter. It’s okay to express dissatisfaction, but the way he has approached it leaves much to be desired. For someone of his stature to say there is no such thing as a tie is unfortunate.”
Merqury pointed out that ties occur in many competitive settings, including sports and prestigious awards. “There are ties in football matches, and there are ties at the Grammys and BET Awards. In 2015, Wizkid and another artist had a tie at the BET Awards, but Sarkodie didn’t complain like Kojo Manuel is doing,” he said.
Merqury also questioned why Kojo Manuel had not raised similar concerns about previous awards he had won, particularly the Best Hypeman title. “Why didn’t he question how he won the Hypeman award in previous years? Why didn’t he ask the Ghana DJ Awards for a breakdown of how he won it? This is why I am disappointed,” he added.
The Guinness Ghana DJ Awards, organized by Merqury Republic, is one of the most prestigious music events in the country, and Merqury emphasized that Kojo Manuel should appreciate the platform that awarded him.
