Heavy Security in Bawku as Election Day Looms – Kan-Dapaah
Minister of National Security Highlights Strong Electoral System and Political Cooperation
Ghana’s Minister for National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah, has confirmed that security in Bawku will be significantly bolstered on Saturday, December 7, 2024, as the area prepares to participate in the general election despite ongoing violent unrest.
Kan-Dapaah made this statement on the Ghana Se Sen Morning Show on Lawson TV/Radio on Friday, December 6, to reinforce the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana’s commitment and preparedness to conduct elections in the Bawku Central constituency and its environs, despite prevailing security challenges.
Kan-Dapaah emphasized the importance of enabling the people of Bawku to exercise their democratic rights, stating, “If they don’t vote, there would be no representation in Parliament from there, and they would not contribute to deciding the next President, which is inappropriate.”
He also disclosed ongoing formal and informal engagements between National Security, local chiefs, and stakeholders to ensure the smooth conduct of the election. According to him, the residents are eager to cast their votes despite the challenges.
When asked by host Kwame Tanko about lifting the curfew post-election to allow for celebrations, Kan-Dapaah firmly stated that the curfew would remain in place to maintain law and order.
