Liverpool manager Arne Slot has described Pep Guardiola’s contract extension at Manchester City as “good news” for the Premier League.

Guardiola, who has been in charge of City since 2016, signed a new two-year deal that will keep him at the club until 2027. Under his leadership, Manchester City has won six Premier League titles, including two tight victories over Liverpool, with both clubs vying for the title in recent years.

Liverpool claimed the title in 2020, creating one of the Premier League’s fiercest rivalries with City. Slot, who succeeded Jurgen Klopp in the summer, has led Liverpool to the top of the table this season, with a five-point lead over second-placed City after 11 games.

Commenting on Guardiola’s new deal, Slot said: “It’s good news for both City and the league. Everyone wants the best managers and best players here. Guardiola is definitely one of the best, if not the best manager in the league. Winning four consecutive titles says a lot about his greatness.”

He continued, “Even though City has so many top-quality players, if Guardiola had chosen to leave, I wouldn’t have expected them to drop to the bottom of the league next season.”

Slot, speaking ahead of Liverpool’s match against Southampton on Sunday, also praised Guardiola as “one of the best managers football has ever had.”

Guardiola, formerly of Barcelona and Bayern Munich, has secured 18 trophies at Manchester City, including the 2023 Champions League.
