The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has emphasized the need for a collaborative, cross-sectoral approach to tackle the country’s rising inflation rate.
While the Bank of Ghana has taken steps to address inflation through monetary policy measures, including recent interest rate cuts, the GSS argues that a broader approach involving various government ministries is crucial.
The GSS highlighted that inflation reached 23.8% in December 2024, exceeding the government’s target of 15%. This increase was primarily driven by rising food prices.
“We definitely need to move the conversation away from a Central Bank’s responsibility alone,” stated Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, Government Statistician. “We need to tackle inflation at least from two perspectives. Every sector ministry… should be responsible.”
Professor Annim emphasized the need for a coordinated effort across ministries to address the underlying causes of inflation and ensure sustainable economic stability.
