President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed his government’s unwavering commitment to combating illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
He emphasized its harmful effects on water bodies, farmland, and the environment, while outlining innovative strategies to intensify the fight.
Speaking at the maiden congregation of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) in Somanya, Eastern Region, he revealed the integration of drone surveillance, responsible mining practices, and community partnerships as critical tools in the effort.
President Akufo-Addo also underscored the importance of training professionals to drive sustainable practices that mitigate climate change. He described the establishment of UESD as a strategic step in creating a generation of experts to address environmental challenges and champion sustainability in sectors like renewable energy, agriculture, and waste management.
“The reality of climate change demands urgent action,” he remarked, highlighting Ghana’s resolve to balance environmental conservation with development.
