The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has renewed its call for a dedicated funding source to support pre-tertiary education in Ghana.

This plea comes amid concerns about the adequacy of financing for the country’s education system, particularly as the government has approved a budget of approximately GHC 31.7 billion for the Ministry of Education in 2025.

In an interview, GNAT General Secretary Thomas Tanko Musah emphasized the importance of securing dedicated funds to address the long-standing financial challenges within education.

He urged the government to move beyond fragmented funding approaches and adopt a more sustainable financing model for the sector.

“We need a dedicated fund. The education sector has multiple needs, from school feeding programs to other essential services. How do we plan to finance all of these? While it’s positive that the GETFund has been uncapped, we need to see specific allocations to address these critical areas,” Musah said.

He further stressed the importance of having a consistent and reliable source of funding to ensure the long-term sustainability of Ghana’s educational initiatives.
