The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has condemned the attack on Murtala Inusah, court correspondent for EIB Network, by supporters of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako.

The incident reportedly took place on October 16, 2024, at the High Court in Accra, where Bishop Amoako and his wife, Mouha, were appearing in connection with a tragic accident involving their son that resulted in two fatalities at East Legon.

In a statement released on Thursday, the GJA described the assault as “devilish” and called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

“The GJA strongly denounces the unwarranted attack on Murtala Inusah by Bishop Salifu Amoako’s supporters,” the statement read. “The assault left him with cuts on his fingers and significant bodily pain. We also learned that a police officer who intervened to assist Inusah was assaulted by the same group, and we condemn this behavior unequivocally.”

The association urged the Ghana Police Service to take swift action in apprehending the assailants and emphasized that the judiciary should impose severe penalties if they are found guilty. Murtala Inusah has filed a report at the Ministries Police Station and submitted the necessary documentation for the case.

During the court proceedings, Inusah, an accredited member of the Judicial Press Corps, was attacked for filming the session, which reportedly angered the suspects’ supporters.

As a result of the attack, Inusah lost his mobile phone and suffered injuries. The GJA reiterated that the assault on both the journalist and the police officer, while performing their duties, is unacceptable and called for strict legal consequences for the perpetrators.
