“Ghanaians Will Judge You After Your Tenure” – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu To Speaker Bagbin

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu attributed the rising chaos and tension in Parliament to the Speaker's controversial statements

Story Highlights
  • Ghanaians will assess Speaker Alban Bagbin's performance based on his actions during his tenure
  • Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu believes Bagbin had the potential to be one of the best Speakers
  • The Speaker's recent declaration of four MPs' seats as vacant has contributed to rising tension in Parliament

Former Majority Leader Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has emphasized that Ghanaians will ultimately evaluate Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin based on his performance in office.

While he refrained from commenting on Asawase MP Hon. Muntaka Mubarak’s claim that Bagbin is a tyrant, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu insisted that the judgment belongs to the public.

In an interview on Lawson TV/Radio ‘Ghana Se Sen’ Morning Show, he expressed disappointment that Alban Bagbin had the potential to be an outstanding Speaker but missed the opportunity.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu attributed the rising chaos and tension in Parliament to the Speaker’s controversial statements and his recent decision to declare four MPs’ seats vacant.

He voiced strong disagreement with this declaration, suggesting it lacked clarity on Bagbin’s intentions.

“If someone declares they will run as an independent candidate, they’re referencing the next Parliament,” he noted.

Referencing Article 97 Clause 1, he explained the legal framework surrounding MPs vacating their seats and argued that Bagbin misinterpreted the ruling, which led Majority Leader Afenyo-Markin to file an ex-parte application at the Supreme Court.
