The 2024 Ghanaian elections concluded on December 9, 2024, after more than 48 hours since the polls closed on December 7.
The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, officially declared John Mahama as the President-elect, with 56.5% of the total votes cast.
In addition to the presidential race, several entertainment personalities contested for parliamentary seats in both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Here are some notable figures who secured victories:
John Setor Dumelo Wins Ayawaso West Wuogon Seat
Actor-turned-politician and businessman John Dumelo contested for the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat under the NDC. This was his second attempt, after facing off with Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the incumbent MP who won in the 2020 elections. Dumelo unseated Alhassan in a landslide victory, securing 47,560 votes, while Lydia Seyram Alhassan garnered 39,214 votes. Dumelo’s win is seen as a significant shift in a constituency traditionally considered a stronghold for the NPP.
Baba Sadiq Wins Okaikwei Central Seat
Music entrepreneur Baba Sadiq also made a successful transition into politics, securing the Okaikwei Central seat under the NDC. After a contentious race, Baba Sadiq beat incumbent MP Patrick Boamah.
In his first-ever election contest, Sadiq won with 15,383 votes, while Boamah received 14,989 votes. The results were based on the collation of data from 141 polling stations, representing 78% of the total votes.
A Plus Wins Gomoa Central Seat
Popular musician Kwame Asare Obeng, known as Kwame A-plus, was elected as the MP for Gomoa Central after contesting as an independent candidate. A-plus secured 14,277 votes out of 36,026 total valid votes cast, defeating the incumbent Naana Eyiah, who received 11,637 votes.
This win came as a surprise, as A-plus, who once aligned with the NPP, ran independently following a fallout with the party.
Ebi Bright Wins Tema Central Seat
Actress and politician Ebi Bright won the highly contested Tema Central seat, securing 18,539 votes. She narrowly defeated Charles Forson of the NPP, who garnered 18,421 votes.
This was Bright’s third attempt at the seat, having previously contested in 2016 and 2020. Tema Central has long been considered a stronghold for the NPP, having been held by the party for 12 years.
These wins highlight the growing influence of entertainment personalities in Ghanaian politics, as several figures from the entertainment industry have now secured seats in the 9th Parliament.
