Ghana Armed Forces Issues Warning Against Unauthorized Use of Military Uniforms

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has issued a stern warning to individuals and groups regarding the unauthorized use of military-pattern uniforms and equipment.
In a press release dated Monday, October 14, signed by Director of Public Affairs Eric Aggrey Quarshie, GAF expressed concern over the increasing trend of civilians and private security personnel wearing military attire during public demonstrations and activities such as illegal mining operations.
The statement highlighted instances of unlawful military uniform usage observed in protests, particularly in Accra and Kumasi, where some demonstrators and individuals claiming to provide security for public figures were seen in military camouflage and other military-style gear.
This practice has raised alarms about potential impersonation and threats to public safety. “These actions risk creating the false impression that these individuals are part of the Ghana Armed Forces, thereby tarnishing the reputation of the Armed Forces,” the statement warned, noting that such acts undermine military integrity.
The GAF emphasized that the unauthorized wearing of military attire contravenes the National Liberation Council Decree (NLCD) 177 of 1967, which prohibits civilians from donning military uniforms, equipment, or accoutrements. The decree explicitly states: “No person shall wear or use any military uniforms, equipment, or accoutrements unless he or she is a member of the Armed Forces of Ghana.”
GAF cautioned that violations of this law could facilitate criminal activities, as individuals impersonating military personnel might exploit their appearance for unlawful purposes. “The misuse of military attire can facilitate impersonation and enable criminal activities, posing a serious threat to public safety,” the release noted.
In response to these concerns, GAF pledged to take decisive action against violators. Individuals caught wearing unauthorized military uniforms will be arrested and face the full force of the law. The public has also been urged to report any suspicious activities involving military uniforms to law enforcement agencies.
“GAF will henceforth take decisive actions, including the arrest of persons who violate these regulations to face the full rigor of the law,” the statement affirmed, emphasizing the importance of public cooperation in maintaining peace and security.
The press release concluded with a reassurance from the Ghana Armed Forces of its commitment to protecting citizens and maintaining the territorial integrity of the nation.
As the country approaches the 2024 general elections, GAF reiterated the importance of upholding law and order, urging all citizens to contribute to ensuring peace and security.
“As we prepare for the 2024 general elections, the cooperation of all citizens is essential in upholding peace and security,” the statement emphasized, underscoring GAF’s unwavering dedication to safeguarding the nation.
